Introduction

|
The E.D.P. srl, certified ISO-9001/2000, is a company
that since 1980 has worked in designing and manufacturing
of electronic devices for scientific equipments and
power conversion.
Strong experience from twenty-five years of presence
in the international market, the EDP has produced
a medical infrared camera - Thermo-Iewy,
that allows a thermographic exam of the human body.
On the market are available a lot of different Infrared
Camera. The fields of Application of this device are
predictive maintenance, building diagnostic, process
control, etc., that requires different spectral bands
and sensibility.
The medical infrared camera Thermo-Iewy
is specially intended for medical application.

| The Thermo-Iewy
camera may be named as one of the top infrared camera in the
world because of advantages, such as:
- New uncooled infrared sensor made with amorphous silicon
(160x120 pixels matrix) that provides extremely high stability
and sensitivity (0.08 Celsius degrees).
- Wide spectral range 7-14 micrometer allows getting the
best thermal images of the human body.
- Modern infrared lens allows examining object with short
and long distance with the same high quality.
- Independent video (NTSC or PAL) and USB 2.0 outputs allow
to work in real mode with any TV (25 frame/s) and directly
with PC (1 frame/s).
- The product is supported with special medical software.
This software has a module constructed with real-time working
with Thermo-Iewy infrared camera. In
real-time operation mode with infrared camera is possible
to improve the quality of received thermograms, using automatic
adaptation of sensitivity and palette shifting. These functions
allow receiving very colour-stable thermograms. Capturing
utility has build-in automatic noise-reduction system and
software interpolation algorithm that allows receive very
clear images and increases the device resolution up to 640x480
pixels (16 times the hardware resolution). Moreover, our
software offer 3D reconstruction of thermogram and a lot
of useful plug-in (isotherms, histograms, etc) and palettes
that allows examination of thermograms in a very easy way.
- Delivery kit is supported with "Medical Infrared
Thermography" book that is a result of personal 20-years
clinical practice of the author (Dr. Alexey Ovechkin) in
application of infrared thermography in medicine. Physical
basis of the method, review of modern infrared devices and
physiological features of temperature are described. Clinical
thermography chapter contains description of thermovisual
symptoms of more than 200 diseases and pathological conditions,
all cases are illustrated by corresponded thermograms, extracted
from the personal databases of the author. The book contains
532 pages with 915 thermograms and 76 figures, 274 references.
For today this book is a biggest and the most comprehensive
manual on medical thermography in the World and may be used
as manual on medical thermography by doctors and medical
students, above all in the first approach towards thermography.
- The device has CE certificate, conforms the 93/42/EEC
Medical Device Directive. About 95% of the thermographs
present in the market are CE marked but don't satisfy the
Medical Device Directive, because their principal fields
of application are: Predictive Maintenance, Quality Control,
Night Surveillance, etc. Instead our device is specifically
designed and produced for Medical Application.

The Software

"Medical Thermography" is a software kit,
specially intended for medical infrared thermography
application. The program works in Windows ME/2000/XP
operating systems and was written in Delphi 5.0 language.
"Medical Thermography" operates with Thermo/IEWY
medical infrared camera and provides all necessary
functions, specific for medical purposes.

User Interface
The Program is designed as a full-screen application. The
user's interface is very easy in operation.
Main application's window is divided on two parts: |

- The left part of the screen contains the set of
main program switchers (1), intended to change the
mode of operation of the program. Below the main program
switchers the control panel (2) is located. The contents
of the control panel is changed in relation to the
operation mode of the program.
- Right part of the screen contains the operation
panel (3). The contents of the operation panel is
dependent on the operation mode of the program. At
the top right corner of the screen two system buttons
(4) are located.

| The Program is designed for multi-user
operation (similar to Windows XP operating system), where
the current user is asked in loading of the program. Information
about design, settings and working database is stored in the
user's configuration and is loaded by program automatically. |

Database
Manager
Program uses original database format, where each patient's
record is stored in separate file. Patient's record contains
all necessary information about the patient (name, sex, age,
text of final conclusion, remarks), as well as thermograms
(up to 32000 in one patient's record). |

Patient's record is displayed as a "case history"
to provide more friendly interface for doctor. All
information is displayed on 4 pages, there are: Identity,
Thermograms, Thermogram table and Remark.
Database is indexed, so user can easy find required
patient or collect a group of patients by their name,
sex, age, keywords in conclusion, name of thermogram
and markers.
Program allows easy create any number of new user's
databases.

Capturing
Thermograms
This version of software has a module constructed with real-time
working with Thermo-Iewy infrared camera,
connected with computer via USB 2.0 interface. |

Typical speed of capturing of thermograms is 1 image
per second.
In real-time operation mode with infrared camera
is possible to improve the quality of received thermograms,
using automatical adaptation of sensitivity and palette
shifting.
These functions allows to receive very color-stable
thermograms.

Capturing utility has build-in automatic noise-reduction
system, that allows receive very clear images.
Special intellectual sensitivity-adaptation system
allows to improve the sensitivity of infrared camera
for 4 times - from 0.08 °C hardware sensitivity
up to 0.02 °C.

Post-Processing of Thermograms
Post-processing functions of thermograms are divided on
two groups: build-in (frequently used functions) and external.

Group of build-in functions contains:
- Changing of palette (12 actual color and black-white
palettes).
- Palette shifting for the best visualization of
thermogram.
- Measuring of temperature difference (in °C
or °F according to user's setting).
- Export of thermogram to standard BMP or JPG images
for the purpose of further processing and using in
another documents.

All external post-processing functions are constructed
as independent DLL-procedures, so it is very easy to get
new functions and upgrade of software kit.

- Geometry Correction
of Thermogram
This function allows to modify geometric parameters
of thermogram by X and Y axes independently and perform
digital zooming of thermograms from -0.5 to +2 ratio.
Also this function provides horizontal and vertical
flipping of image.
After all these modifications the thermogram is processed
for reconstruction new binary 2D-matrix of thermogram.

- Isotherm
This function allows to apply one or two independent
isotherms on thermogram to define areas with equal
temperatures.
The thermal width, color and position of each isotherm
are defined and modified by user independently.

- 3D Thermogram
Reconstruction of 3D thermogram is one of the most
interesting functions of the "Medical Thermography"
software kit.
In this case X and Y axes of final 3D thermogram
are corresponded to X and Y axes of the native 2D
binary matrix, and the Z axe is correspondent to the
temperature in the each point of thermogram.
User can modify the palette, depth of image and
brightness of thermogram.

Printing the patient's report with thermograms is
easy and is performing on two steps: select the thermograms
to be print out and press "Print" button
after.
Printing is performing by the program according to
special user's defined "Style", where many
parameters are defined, such as: headers and fonts,
size and position of thermograms on the page, possibility
to print-out thermograms' headers, remarks etc.

Online Consultation
This function allows the sending of selected patient's records
(together with thermograms) to another doctor. |
