The Nuts and Bolts All right so it a completely different format to last year so hear it goes. The top 10 ranking IronMen and IronWomen from last season's events will gain automatic entry into the races on the Gold Coast and at Portsea. As the total race line-up for both the IronMan and IronWoman will consist of 20 competitors, trial races will be held on 29 November at Coffs Harbour in NSW to select the final 10. The top ten athletes who make it through to the final will compete in three separate races. Four athletes will be eliminated after the first race and three after the second race, leaving just three athletes to compete for the honour of overall Nutri-Grain IronMan Champion and IronWoman champion. Formats will vary between shorter and longer courses over the three events. Only the top 10 athletes, based on a pointscore operating across the first two events, will compete in the challenging 'do or die' final in Sydney. Surf Sports was kind enough to provide us with a breakdown of the three rounds which should make things a little clearer. EVENT 1: Gold Coast 28 December 2003. Total of 20 athletes compete. 3 'continuous' IronMan races. Eliminate last 2 athletes after first IronMan race. Second race to commence immediately after 18th athlete crosses the finish line. Eliminate last 3 athletes after second IronMan race. Third race to commence immediately after 15th athlete crosses the finish line. EVENT 2: Portsea 11 January 2004. Total of 20 athletes compete. 3 X IronMan races - approximate 5 minute break between each race. Eliminate last 5 athletes after each IronMan race. FINAL: Sydney 22 February, 2004. Total of 10 qualified athletes compete. 3 X IronMan races - approximate 10 minute break between each race. Eliminate 4 after first race. Eliminate 3 after second race. Race winner is overall series winner. What's in the pot? The event prize money for each Series that is men's and women's will be $150,000 each. The rumours that there was going to be unequal prize money can be dismissed. 24 SEPTEMBER 2003 NUTRI-GRAIN IRONMAN SERIES DATES ANNOUNCED Kellogg Australia today announced the dates for this summer's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain IronMan Series. The 2003/04 competition will consist of three rounds, comprising both IronMan and IronWoman racing, scheduled for the weekends of 27 and 28 December, 10 and 11 January and 21 and 22 February. It is expected that the events will be staged in Queensland, Victoria and Sydney and telecast on the Seven Network nationally. Kellogg also announced that its sponsorship of IronMan racing with Surf Life Saving Australia has been renewed for the next two surf seasons. According to Kevin Brennan, Marketing Director of Kellogg Australia, the intention is to drive more excitement around the sport and put IronMan and IronWoman racing in the spotlight. "We are committed to high profile IronMan racing and happy to continue our investment in the sport. We're looking forward to bigger and better events, and more action both on and off the beach, all designed to help the sport realise its full potential. For the athletes and for the spectators alike, it's going to be a sensational season," Brennan said. Greg Nance from Surf Life Saving Australia says he is delighted with Kellogg's ongoing commitment to IronMan competition in Australia. The Nutri-Grain IronMan Series is a fantastic showcase for our IronMen and IronWomen athletes ? we are delighted with Kellogg's support to allow this sport to evolve and grow." According to last season's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain IronMan Champion Shannon Eckstein, today's announcement has ended months of speculation in the athlete community, many of whom are in the midst of pre-season training. "Having a professional IronMan race to complement the traditional surf lifesaving calendar adds so much to the sport. It gives us athletes so much to aim for. I'm looking forward to hitting the beach this season to defend my crown," added Shannon. Kellogg's and Surf Lifesaving Australia are currently working together to finalise further details of the Nutri-Grain IronMan Series and are hoping to announce these in the not too distant future. |
