In February 2004, the Surf Life Saving Foundation was the beneficiary of the Cupid's Ball, a black tie 'bachelor and spinster' gala. This event was held simultaneously in five different states: Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland Victoria and South Australia, and raised over $20,000 for surf life saving. One of the evening's activities involved an icebreaker game, whereby contestants were 'matched up' using cards illustrated with different club caps. The cards were made using the graphics from the Club Cap Colour Guide. The Surf Life Saving Foundation expresses its gratitude to the creator of the Club Cap Colour Guide, as this contributed to the success of the evening. The wording added is as follows: Caps, securely fastened under the chin, must be worn on the head at the start (including the start of each leg in the teams events) of all events. A competitor/team shall not be disqualified if a cap is inadvertently displaced or lost after the start of an event provided that officials can identify that the competitor correctly completed the course/event".
