

Some background: the spacesuit is a replica of an A7LB EMU (Extravehicular Mobility Unit), first used on Apollo 15 in 1971, and continued in slightly varied forms through Apollo 17, SkyLab, and up to the shuttle era. A7LBs still feature occassionally in astronaut training, but are for the most part superceded by the modern space shuttle EMUs. Since the shuttle has an air lock, the modular design of interchangeable connectors that featured on the chest of the A7LB are no longer required. And since the shuttle EMU is designed for microgravity only, it doesn't need the sophisticated hinges and bellows in the legs that were designed for the A7LB - an EMU designed for walking on the Moon. I have spent the last 5 years on and off building this EMU, and it has gone through a few changes and incarnations in that time, mostly affected by availability of research material.
