I moved to Melbourne Australia in 1992 and in 1996 I decided to take up darts again. Problem is in Australia is basically an underground sport. Most people seem to get into it by knowing a "friend of a friend". With the widespread introduction of pokie even the traditional home of darts - the local pub isn't bothered.

Anyway I met up with John Davies ( an extremely likeable Irishman )and joined his team "Grumen" at the Dandenong Club. Playing in the Friday Night League  we went from Division 2 in the first year to Division 1 in the second.

Continuing problems with the management of the Dandenong Club meant that I transfered to Noble Park. I got in their number one team with the "Big Boys" Theo, Pete and Harry, three giant Dutchmen , no mean dart players. Above all we have fun. We seemed to have developed a very vocal system of sledging ( of our own players ) that some teams seem to find just more than a little weird. Aren't you supposed to hang shit on the opposition not your own team. But it works for us. We are all great mates and we feed off each other. Dave and I are the only ones who play regularly in the Opens but this year by god did we come close to a major upset against the 'Name players"

I also play off and on in the Monday Night Premier League. Its not a real strong league but it suits me because of my work hours. This year  Pete Reynolds came back

He always plays to win. I just don't have that killer instinct and sometimes playing players I know I win against I lose concentration and let the games get away in terms of averages. I really do enjoy playing against this guy.

My major night is Thursday  Super League. Format for this is Teams of 3 players, selected on averages. Singles 501 only, 11 legs 3 each against players not in your category and 5 legs against the player in your classification. Points awarded not only for wins but short legs,  high finishes, and 180s. In the end it all translates into dollars at the end of the season. Not unusual to see 30+ averages from Steve Duke

or Justin Thompson. the room goes dead when someone looks at getting close to a 9 darter. Mario for example went 180 180 60 and just landed his 8th dart beside the wire in the treble 7 on his attempt. Or on a 170 peg. Steve Duke Jnr hit one first leg against me one night, wired the bull on attempts in the 2nd and 3rd legs. Pete Reynolds Hit one two nights in a row
