Rowees Darts
I started playing darts 1978-1979. I was working at Makarewa Freezing Works at the time. Everyone on plant put in a dollar a week into the Sports Fund. This fund raised money to pay for travel and accommodation to the National Sports Tournament for Meat Workers. This was in a time when the Meat Works were a big deal and the Sports contested were of played at a very high level. I decided after a couple of years of putting into this fund with no return that things had to change. I wasn't into team sorts and was not very athletic which basically limited my choices to fishing pool or darts. Fishing was out as I get violently seasick. There was no way I could ever buy a pool table, we lived in rented houses and were constantly moving. So, by default darts it was.
I joined the Invercargill Darts Association, a brilliant move as it turned out. The talent of the top players was enormous. Ron Templeton at one stage had I believe the World Record for going round the board scoring doubles in the fastest time. He and Lex Turner won many individual and National titles and they were only too happy to teach a raw young player. They had also amongst there midst a player who I believe was the finest I had the pleasure to play against. Barry Templeton. He went to England to try his hand on the circuit only to fall victim it seemed at every post by the talents of one Bob "Cowboy" Anderson. His relaxed style was perfection in my eyes. The first season I remember playing in my white gumboots but was persuaded that maybe this wasn't perhaps the most suitable attire

With the Meat Works Tournaments I played in Dunedin, Nelson, Wellington, Gisborne, Hastings and the last in Invercargill mostly with reasonable success
winning in wellington with the Paenga Sheild
