There were only two major factories producing Rocking Horses in Australia; F.J.Roebuck & Sons of Sydney (1885-1972) and R.J.Bartlett in Melbourne (1913-72). The 1941 size 3 model shown here was made at their Leichhardt , NSW factory. Apart from the small 1952 ‘Colt’ model on rockers, the size 3 (made on a copy lathe) was the most popular horse with over 2000 units produced in 1958. First produced in 1935 with a Blue saddle-cloth and Red edge until 1941 when production stopped in favour of essential war work. It re-appeared in mid 1945 with a Red cloth and Blue edging. 1953 saw the riveted washer give way to the chrome cap and a Tartan cloth with Gold edge. There were numerous other small changes made through the production runs that give a clue to the period it was made.  Prior to 1935 the firm made 6 sizes of horse and sub-contracted a number of items for Lines Brothers ‘Cyclops’ range of ride-on toys. Average restoration charge for this model is around $AU785.

Over a period of time, we intend to bring you snippets of information that may help you identify ‘your’ horse!
