TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

This is to certify that NEIL POLLOCK, of [deleted] has been known to me since 1983 when we began working together at Marrickville Municipal Library. At that time I joined the Council and Neil was a senior member of the Library staff, being the Librarian I/C of the Marrickville Adult Library. In a major reorganisation which followed he was appointed to the newly created position of TechnIcal Services Librarian. In this capacity he was responsible for the establishment and operations of the new Section and for the elimination of a large number of cataloguing/processing backlogs, using additional temporary staff.

From late 1984 Neil was appointed to a temporary position of Automation Co-ordinator, which in 1988 became a permanent position and was renamed Systems Librarian. The duties of this position in the initial stages involved the planning, preparation and supervision of the installation of an automated library system into the Council's Libraries Department. Once the position became permanent the duties included the on-going operation and development of the automated system, with special regard to the future needs of the Libraries Department in terms of upgrading existing systems and long term evolution of the system in relation to the changing technology.

Since early 1989, Neil Pollock has been the Deputy Librarian and we have been working closely together as a result. His main duties are the day to day management of the Library Service, supervising the Section Heads, assisting the Chief Librarian and acting as Chief Librarian in my absence. Our association in the past two years has developed in both professional and personal terms, and I have the greatest confidence in him and in his abilities as a librarian, as a Council officer, and as a manager.

Neil is a most conscientious person. He works hard, and is an outstanding example to all the staff. His skills in handling and looking after staff are excellent. He always finds time to allow staff to make their points of view known, and he is seen to give attention to all aspects of problems. As a professional librarian Neil has a very active and well developed sense of the importance of the principle that readers and reader services are paramount in any library, but particularly in public libraries. Neil has an excellent personality and relates well to the staff under his control, to the public, to the staff of other Departments at all levels, and to members of Council. I have no hesitation in recommending him to any employer to whom he is applying for a position.
