Pollock Family
Alexander Pollock (1841-1915) from Donegal to Balldale
Summary: Alex Pollock was a Ulster Scot farmer who arrived in Queensland aged 29 and settled in the Goulburn Valley of northern Victoria and later near Balldale in the Riverina. Alex Pollock and Mary Jane (Kilpatrick) had five sons...all farmers.
1. Origin of the Pollocks
Pollock is of Scottish origin, and comes from lands of that
name in what was Renfrewshire, a few miles south-west of
Glasgow, around the city of Paisley. Pollok and Pollokshaws
are today suburbs of Glasgow. In the U.S. the name changed to
Polk, and the llth U.S. president James Polk was the
descendant of Scottish emigrant Robert Pollock.
Many Scots especially from south-western areas emigrated to
the northern part of Ireland in the 1600s and 1700s.
According to Jim Pollock of Teevickmoy, Donegal, Ireland, two
Pollock brothers came over from Scotland in the early 1700s.
They settled at Liskeran and Meenavoy, localities just north
of Stranorlar in Donegal.
2. Pollocks In Ireland
A map of key localities in Donegal's Finn Valley which are mentioned below
The remaining Pollocks at Liskeran reported that their grandfather Robert Pollock had
three brothers, two went to America, and one, Alexander went to Australia.
The one who came to Australia was Alexander Pollock. Two
grandchildren of the Pollock brother who stayed in Ireland
lived until recently at Liskeran; they were Robert Pollock and Tillie
Pollock - both unmarried and in their eighties - they were deceased by 2001.
Alexander Pollock was born at Liskeran in 1841. His parents
were Samuel Pollock, a farmer, and Jane Thompson. The Irish
land records of 1857 lists Samuel Pollock as holding land at
Liskeran (also a James Pollock). Samuel held 75acres leased
from a George Wilson.
Alexander Pollock married Mary Jane Kilpatrick at Stranorlar
on the 12th April 1870.
More on Pollocks in Ireland from Jim Pollock of Moorview, Tivockmoy (aka Teevickmoy). ....Robert and Tillie Pollock's father's name was Alexander, they had an uncle Robert who lived
at Dunwiley a mile or two south of Liskeran. Robert Pollock,
the uncle, has two grandsons who live in Melbourne, Ivan and
Malcolm. Tillie and Robert Pollock had the following brothers
and sisters, Samuel, Lily, Margaret, Ernest and Norman (all deceased).
Records show that in 1857 there were quite a number of Pollock holding lands in the adjoining locations just north of Stranorlar:
- Liskeran: James Pollock and Samuel Pollock
- Meenavoy: Richard Pollock, John Pollock, James Pollock (grandfather of Jim Pollock of Tivickmoy) and David Pollock
- Teevickmoy: John Pollock and Joseph Pollock
- Dunwiley: John Pollock
Samuel Pollock Family in Donegal
Alexander Pollock's father, Samuel Pollock married Jane Thompson. Their children are thought to include:
- Sarah Pollock. She is thought to have married John Pollock (note same name), farmer of Meenavoy 15 May 1854.
- Jenny Pollock: baptised 24 May 1837
- Mary Pollock: baptised 17 May 1839
- Alexander Pollock: baptised 12 Nov 1841
- James Steele Pollock: baptised 18 May 1844. Went to America?
- Robert Pollock ; father of an Alexander Pollock - who was father of the last remaining Pollocks at Liskeran
- possibly another son Samuel? who went to America?
3. Kilpatricks In Ireland
Mary Jane Kilpatrick was born at Teevickmoy, two miles from
Liskeran in 1848. Her parents were George Kilpatrick, a
farmer and Janet Fairman. Her brother Thomas Kilpatrick preceded her in emigrating to Australia, while her parents and many other relatives also moved from Donegal to northern Victoria in the 1870s.
The name Kilpatrick is Scottish in origin, meaning church of
Patrick. It is not possible to trace it to a particular
location because the same name was used for different places.
According to Jim Pollock in Ireland, the Kilpatricks of
Teevickmoy had all deceased 'about 70years ago'.
See the Kilpatrick file for more information
Notes on the Finn Valley
Stranorlar, Liskeran, Tivockmoy and Meenavoy are all in the rich Finn Valley. According to
a Stranorlar web site the Finn Valley was settled by Scottish and English settlers as part of the Plantation of Ulster, in the aftermath of Cromwell. possession of the rich land of the Finn Valley was the top priority for Scots and English settlers in Donegal. Stranorlar was chosen as a frontier post in the Plantation.
4. Arrival of Pollocks in Australia
Alexander Pollock from Liskeran and his wife Mary Jane left for Australia
barely one month after their marriage. They sailed on the Young Australia which left London on 17 May 1870
with about 238 passengers. They travelled in steerage but were not
assisted immigrants - that is they were in the poorest accommodation but paid their way. The ship arrived at Moreton Bay, Brisbane on the 25 August 1870. [Note: The Young Australia sunk on a return
voyage in 1872].
Alexander Pollock worked on a property for a Mr. Barton in Queensland for
about 9 months and then moved to Victoria.
5. Other Pollocks Who Came To Australia
One of the Pollocks from Meenavoy emigrated to Australia in about 1860, settling in Queensland. His descendants still live in the Bundaberg area. John Pollock and wife Letitia (nee Dinsmore) from Stranorlar came to Australia in 1869 aged 22 and 20. They sailed from Plymouth 2 Jul 1869 and arrived in Brisbane 25 Sep 1869 on the Royal Dane. They farmed at Beaudesert and moved to the Bundaberg area around 1894. Their family consisted of 8 boys and 5 girls. Most are buried at Bundaberg. John Pollock's father, James is thought to be Samuel Pollock's cousin. James Pollock also married a Kilpatrick, Matilda Kilpatrick.

selected 320 acres of land at Taripta, near Kyabram, circa 1881. The following children were born:

6. The Pollocks Move to Balldale
In 1903 John Morrissey, a member of the Victorian parliament who lived in
the Lower Goulburn Valley at Byrneside, purchased the Quat Ouatta estate. This
estate on the NSW side of the Murray River between Corowa and Howlong was
subdivided by Morrissey and sold to Lower Goulburn Valley farmers in 1903 and
1904.
In late 1903 a party of twelve from the Mooroopna district travelled
by buggy and wagonette to inspect and most of them bought around where the
village of Balldale now stands. A little later another party of Victorians,
from the Yarroweyah and Boorhaman districts, bought blocks. Some of the
families that bought Quat Quatta farms included:

11. Death of Alexander and Mary Jane Pollock
Alexander Pollock died at Balldale on the 16th November 1915 at the age of
74 years. He was described in the Corowa Free Press as "one of the oldest
settlers of Balldale". He was buried at Hopefield cemetery.
Mary Jane Pollock died at Balldale on the 16th September 1924 aged 76
years. She is also buried at Hopefield.
12. Number of Descendants
Mary Jane and Alex raised five of the eight children born.
These five had 42 children (an average of more than eight each) - 39 of whom lived to adulthood.
These 39 grandchilden of Alex and Mary Jane produced 106 great-grandchildren (plus two adopted). These grand-children of Matt Pollock of Yerong Creek numbered 40, George Pollock of Tallimba 31, Alex Pollock of Wahgunyah 22, Tom Pollock of Quandialla 13, and Robert Pollock of Balldale 2.
It is likely that the next two generations have now pushed the number of descendants well above two hundred.
