Direct travel to and from
Chobe
For most delegates the most direct route to Kasane would normally
be to fly into Johannesburg International Airport in South Africa
and make an International transfer to Victoria Falls airport in
Zimbabwe. Kasane is 85 km by road from Victoria Falls (95 km from
VicFalls airport). There is a South African Airways flight each
morning, with Air Zimbabwe and Comair for example (currently
approx. $380 - 400 US) which is likely to be inadequate to
transport all delegates without advance booking. In addition this
would require staying an extra night in Kasane or overnight in
Victoria Falls on August 24 (~ $165 US hotel), visa fee ($30 US)
for non-Commonwealth passport holders, transfer to Kasane ($55 US),
and $20 US departure tax from Vic' Falls. Flights between Harare
and Vic Falls are currently priced from $300 US - Visa and
transfer costs are the same.
If you need to over-night in Vic Falls let us know we can
organise accommodation for all budgets - see the 'Vic Falls' page
at: http://www.natural-events.com
The Executive has arranged for a same-day (August 18 departure)
return charter flight from Jo'burg to Kasane (currently quoted at
$475 US including airport - lodge transfers) that would provide
an overall cost saving and reduce the journey time for
international delegates by one day at the start and one day at
the end of the meeting. A day trip to Vic Falls will be available
from Kasane during the meeting (see Sunday activities).
BOTTOM LINE - if you don't take
the charter flight you'll very likely need at least one extra
night in Kasane or Vic Falls.
We have
arranged for one-way charters (at 50% of the return cost) for
delegates who:
A) wish to travel to Botswana before August 18 but return by
Charter to Jo'burg on August 24 by direct charter
B) wish to travel from Jo'burg to Kasane on August 18 by direct
charter but remain in Botswana/Zimbabwe after the meeting

FLIGHT EXAMPLES. Based on the situation during August 2000.
Travel with QANTAS is $161 US more to fly Sydney - Vic Falls, compared to Sydney - Jo'burg/Harare. However, the flights arrive in Harare and Jo'burg in the evening and would mean leaving a day early, a night in a hotel or at the airport, travel to Vic Falls the next morning and then transfer to Botswana - ugh! Consider QANTAS to Singapore and SINGAPORE AIRLINES to Jo'burg - gets in early on Saturday morning. Also see routes, times and costs for South African Airways. See from SYDNEY below
Travel with British
Airways is currently quoted as £771 London - Vic-Falls and; £535 London - Jo'burg,
almost exactly $400 US difference. This flight will get you to
Vic Falls on August 18 in time to transfer to Kasane.
If you need to over-night in Vic Falls let us know we may be able
to get you cheaper accommodation
Virgin also fly to Jo'burg these days!
Travel with Lufthansa
code shares with South African Airways and United
Airlines, and prices seem similar. The
problems of over-nighting as for British Airways.
From Frankfurt the cheapest flight to Vic Falls is currently about $1513 US (mixing S.African, Air Zim and Lufhansa) and about $998 US to Jo'burg. A whopping difference of $515 US.
From London the cheapest flight to Vic Falls is currently about $1231 US (mixing British Airways and Virgin Atlantic) and about $858 US to Jo'burg (Virgin Atlantic).
From Atlanta the cheapest flight to Vic Falls is currently about $2233 US (mixing British Airways, Delta, KLM and S.Africa) and as low as $1762 US to Jo'burg (Delta and Sabena Airlines).
From Sydney the cheapest flight to Vic Falls is via Singapore and
currently about $2002 US and $1610 US to Jo'burg. Look HERE for detailed cost and routing example
Travel via Harare as an
economy?
Most International Airlines fly into Harare in Zimbabwe
but usually via Johannesburg. Travel from Johannesburg
to Vic Falls is not usually discounted as part of an
International Ticket - it's a far too popular and underserviced
route. Flights to Harare may be discounted, as part of an
International Ticket, and cheaper than direct to Vic Falls. A
transfer from Harare to Vic Falls is required. Hire car is
an option or an internal Flight with Air Zimbabwe ($300 US in
2000). Road transfer from Vic Falls to Kasane is then
required. All the problems with Visa and Hotel costs remain. This
option appears superior to the charter flight or flights into Vic
Falls only if you intend to visit Zimbabwe as part of a pre- or
post-conference tour.
Flying to Harare may be an economy if you are planning a pre or post conference safari in Zimbabwe that has Harare and one end and Vic Falls at the other. See Zimbabwe Safaris at http://www.natural-events.com
Day trips to Vic Falls can be arranged from Kasane, either on the Sunday for all delegates or on any day for accompanying persons (assuming the mininum number of people are interested).
Travel via Victoria Falls
AND
Travel with pre- or post-meeting
tours within Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and/or northern Namibia
(for pre-/post tours within South Africa the Charter flight
connection to Kasane is recommended)
Pre- and Post-Conference Safaris are very likely to originate
from Vic Falls (or can be so arranged). Many of the Safari &
Lodge options offered by Natural Events include transfers
from Vic Falls. We are currently attempting to arrange one-way
charters direct Kasane-Jo'burg and Jo'burg-Kasane allowing
delegates to fly one-way between Jo'burg and Vic Falls or Jo'burg
and Maun (or the reverse). Scheduled flights in southern Africa
are usually about 55 - 60% of the return flight price.
IF YOU PLAN TO SAFARI IN BOSTWANA OR ZIMBABWE please look at the ADVISORY on flights - HERE
SEE FLIGHT examples above
Air Botswana to fly into Kasane from Maun three times each week and into Victoria Falls three times each week. Air Botswana have arrangements with several International Airlines to fly into Gaborone but these all seem to be via Johannesburg. Thus Jo'burg - Gabarone - Maun - Kasane!
NOTE: If you arrange for flights into and out of Kasane and need extra nights accommodation please contact the Executive.
Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is not only a top spot for starting/concluding tours but is comfortable driving distance to Kasane (Chobe). The Executive have arranged for a road transfer to and from Vic Falls on the afternoons of Saturday 18, August and of Friday 24, August.
NOTE: If you need a transfer at some other time please contact the executive. Otherwise, companies such as United Touring Company (UTC) can provide tranfers on an ad hoc basis. UTC have an office in Vic Falls townsite around the corner next to the 'Wimpy Burger' bar, just up the road from the Post Office. They also have a desk down the hallway to the right of the reception/lobby in the Victoria Falls Hotel.
Most International Airlines fly
into Harare but again usually via Johannesburg.
If you are planning only a short stay in Zimbabwe we can help you with accommodation in Victoria Falls, and help you plan overnight visits to nearby lodges and National Parks
For cost effective Pre and Post-Conference Safari options see: Safari and Tour Operators; including combined charter flights to Jo'burg
