The great majority of overseas flights arrive at Jo'burg International between 6.30 and 8.30 am. The first Charter will depart from Jo'burg at a 10.00 am and overseas delegates will be able to make an International Transfer without clearing S. African Customs and Immigration. Should a second charter be viable it will depart at 12.00 noon.

The charter includes transfers to and from Mowana and Chobe Safari Lodges, and Thebe Camping.

There is a 20 kg checked luggage allowance.

South African Airways, Comair (BA in Africa) nd Air Zimbabwe each operate morning flights from Jo'burg to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This is an extremely popular and under-serviced tourist route. Current prices are $380-$410 US. Delegates attempting to travel this way will likely be required to stay 1 night in Vic Falls (current hotel prices start at $165 US) due to the early departure of the flight from Vic Falls and the delay at Zimbabwe - Botswana border crossing at Kazangula. From Victoria falls a transfer for the 80 km to Kasane currently costs $35 - $45 US using a company such as UTC (based in Harare and office at Vic Falls Hotel). Non-commonwealth passport holders will currently pay $30 US to enter, and again to re-enter, Zimbabwe on their return and at least $20 US tax on leaving through Vic Falls Airport.

Delegates will be able to elect for a budget do-it-yourself trip (approx $50 US), or a deluxe day trip to Victoria Falls on Sunday 19 August for approximately $130 US plus Zimbabwe entry visa (if required).

Air Botswana run scheduled services from Jo'burg to Maun (Botswana) via Gabarone, and then connecting from Maun to Kasane, currently on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The 1999 Price including transfers was $445 US. The return flights from Kasane to Jo'burg require a 5 min connection time in Maun and do not arrive in Jo'burg to meet many International Departures that same night.

Maun is a major staging point for the tourist industry into central Botswana and the Okavango delta. We are advised by local operators that flights from Jo'burg to Maun are routinely fully booked. It is not likely that a substantial number of delegates will be able to utilise this route.

Coming from the Theriological Congress?

The programme for the Congress shows it concludes on 17 August. Delegates can transfer from Sun City to Jo'burg on that evening, spending a night in the hotel adjacent to the airport (our recommendation and likely most cost effective) or leave from Sun City early on the Saturday 18 August to join the Charter to Kasane. Be advised you should allow for at least a 3 hour drive.

Going to the IUPS meeting?

Assuming that the Charter Flight has proven viable you will likely need to use it. Leaving Kasane on August 24 by the Charter you will arrive in Jo'burg in time for the evening flights to Australia and on to New Zealand. Normally this would put you in Christchurch late on August 25. The IUPS starts on August 26.

If you are going on to the IUPS meeting and you wish to take a Pre-Chobe 2001 Safari you need to plan carefully. If your tour is in South Africa or Namibia then the Charter remains your best option. If you want to take a Safari in Botswana or Zimbabwe you need to look at the the appropriate travel page - see 'pre & post meeting safari' on the main page.

Tip! If originating from America or Europe consider the economy of a 'round the world ticket'. Fly to Jo'burg, from Jo'burg to Perth, Australia, to Christchurch, N.Z. and onto L.A. and home.
