Watching track or road racing is exciting stuff, especially the track racing at the Dunc Grey Velodrome at Bass Hill. It's about a 60-70 min ride out there from Leichhardt for an evenings racing, thru Strathfield, Lidcombe, Berala, Regents Park, to the velodrome in Carysfield Rd, Bass Hill, just off the Great Western Highway at Johnston Rd.
The Clarence St Cup and the State championships are worth a look and there are International Championships too. Catch the train home from Regents Park or Yagoona if too tired to pedal home.
The velodrome is interesting in itself- a very big world class enclosed banked wooden circuit, with good spectator seating all round. Bike parking out the front, although they let us bring our bikes in the top entrance. You can even hire a track bike and book a session to have a go yourself. See photos of LBUG members learning the ropes in February 2008.
Other times we have been to Bumble Hill (famed steep hill back of Wyong) for a stage of the Commonwealth Bank Classic and out to Criteriums at Hurstville or Darling Harbour. Now that the CBC is no longer held, we wonder what event will replace it.
LBUG members waste a fair bit of time on watching the Tour de France in June/July every year, and some of us dream of doing the Alp D'huez one day.
