Oblivion is a next gen game designed by Bethesda softworks, it is as you've probably guessed the 4th installment of the elder scrolls game.
Oblivion has a story of its own like the other elder scroll games but still ties in with the other games, Eg you don't only play the imperial race you can quest as the races from the other lands, some npc's also talk of these distant lands in game.
You need a fairly new system to run TES:4 oblivion. According to the oblivion box placed in front of me: OS: Windows XP ( with the newest direct X drivers i must note ) RAM: 512mb CPU: 2ghz Pentium 4 or equivalent Video card: 128mb Direct X 9.0 compatible card
Really i recommend OS:windows xp Ram: 768mb or more CPU: 2.8 ghz Video Card: same as above
I run oblivion on Win xp , 768mb , 2.6ghz , nvidia leadtek 6600gt 128mb ( AGP slot ). See below for some screen shots

Better looking textures from far away- remove that "pea soup" look
Most of these tweaks require tweaking your oblivion.ini file in "My Documents/My Games/oblivion/Oblivion.ini" that is the default path.'
i recommend you back it up.
The otherway is to adjust some of the video settings in the in game menu so its lower than your current ones but still good looking oblivion in my opinion is playable at 20+ fps.
Grass size:iMinGrassSize=110, This is the size i recommend setting it for, it controls how tightly packed the grass is. if too high the grass will be dense and cause fps lag, if set to low this will result in alot of empty spaces in between grass.
Also bringing up the console in the game and typing tdt will show your fps in game or you can just use a 3rd party program like fraps.
