DEFRAG

Business Computing Tips
By K&K Fainges kfainges@bigpond.net.au
Your computer can get disorganised. Bits of data tend to spread over the
system getting in the way. Defragging solves this problem by sorting it all
out for you. Defragmenting, or defraging your system is a good habit to get
into. To defrag your computer, go to START - PROGRAMS - SYSTEM TOOLS.
BUT...there is always a but. Defragging can take quite a long time and many
people can't get defrag to run on their system. There is a reason for that. If
you are running a program while trying to defrag, the two will try to use the
same space at once and defrag will keep resetting itself to the start.
So you turn everything off, and it still doesn't run. This is because
several programs run in the background and you don't realise they are there
until you go to do something like a defrag.
To turn off these hidden programs, press the Control (Ctrl) Alt and Delete
keys on your keyboard all at the same time. A box will come up with a list of
programs you have running. Turn off everything except explorer and systray by
clicking on each program in turn and hitting the 'end task' button.

Other programs that can help speed up your computer, or fix problems are
covered in a past K-tip.
