Chakra HealingKnowledge of the chakras can be found in texts and artwork throughout India, Egypt, China, Tibet, Hawaii, in various parts of Europe and Africa and among American Indian tribes. The Hopi Indians, who are believed to be the oldest tribe in North America, compare the axis of the earth to the human spine. During the late 1800s, Alice Bailey and the early British Theosophists travelled to India and returned to write about the chakras, bringing a greater understanding of this ancient knowledge to the West. Chakra (pronounced shock-ra or chock-ra) in Sanskrit means wheel or disk. Chakras are non-physical invisible (to the normal human eye) energy centres of spinning energy, vortexes or multi-petalled lotus flower that are located in the etheric body that surrounds the physical body. These flowers, which are considered sacred in India, symbolise the path of development from a primitive being to the full evolution of unfolded awareness. They float upon the water, yet they have their roots in the mud, just as the flower of your crown chakra connects to the heavens and your base chakra has its roots in the earth. Through the chakras, we are able to receive and transmit social, sexual and spiritual energy, enabling us to absorb energy from the environment and from other people, and transmute it into a form of nourishment for our own body, emotions, mind and spirit. Within the human body, we have numerous locations where energy is focused. We have 7 major chakras and each deals with a specific aspect of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual person. It is with the opening of each chakra that we may go to the next level of consciousness to create a wholeness within ourselves. Each chakra has a special colour. All your seven energy vortexes or whorls of spinning energy radiates like multi-coloured suns along the axis of your spine that interpenetrate the body. The epicentre can be felt or seen 2-3 inches beyond the body, in both the back and the front. Some experience the energy of the chakras at the front of the spine, others at the rear and some at both front and rear. Some pictures depict the chakras as wheels of light located on or close to the spine and some show the chakras extending out a few inches from the front or the back of the body on a stem that opens into a round flower. When we are out of balance due to fear, stress, guilt or confusion, our ability to draw upon these energy centres diminishes. As we clear away the blocks and become balanced and clear, we become direct conduits for ongoing streams of energies from various sources which can give us phenomenal powers. The primary work of the energy healer is to help clear away obstructions so that one can have easy access to these powerful transforming stations.
