Matthew Kitching
(1792 - )
Matthew Kitching
was born in 1792 in Hunslet, Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
He was christened on 6 May 1792 at St Peters in Leeds. He was the
8th child and 6th son of Joseph Kitching, his mother
is unknown.
His father passed
away when he was 4 years old, it is unknown who raised him, but
from what we can deduce it appears that the family were Tavern Owners,
so it is most likely that his mother raised him along with his siblings
whilst continuing to run the taverns.
On 23 December 1816 Matthew married Mary
Cawkill in Fulford Yorkshire - approximately ? km from
Leeds. Mary's parentage is unknown, but the couple proceeded to
have at least 9 children between 1818 and 1832.

By 1822, Matthew is recorded in the Baines directory
as a victualler and the proprietor of the Turk's Head Tavern at
51 Turk's Head Yard, Briggate, Leeds. He continued as proprietor
of the Tavern until at least 1829 - when he is noted in the Pigots
Directory - before taking over the London Tavern at East Row, Free
Market, Leeds by 1834 - noted in 1834 Pigots. He was still running
the London Tavern in 1838.
It appears that Turk's Head may have infact been
sold to one of his brother James Kitchin, as it is he who is operating
the Tavern in 1834 and 1838. There was also one other of his brothers,
George who run the Rising Sun Tavern at 13 Marsh Lane.
It is unknown when either Matthew or Mary died.
