THE VILLAGE HISTORY: THE IMMIGRANTS
|
PROPOSED MEMORIAL
Several descendants of these Nieder-Weisel pioneers plan to have a small memorial erected in Nieder-Weisel as a tribute to these courageous people who travelled half-way around the world to start a new life on the Victorian goldfields, and to the enormous contribution that they made to our society. The memorial, which has the blessing of the Nieder-Weisel civic authorities, will take the form of a bronze bas-relief by Victorian artist Ross Bastiaan, whose work can be seen in several World War I sites such as Gallipoli and northern France. Pictured below is a memorial prepared him at Mouquet Farm in the Somme Valley of northern France. A story, written in both German and English, will describe the adventurous and pioneering spirit of these remarkable people. Some funds have already been raised to meet the cost of memorial, but more are needed - anyone who would like to support the project should contact Don Hauser at dlhauser@bigpond.com or Alan Haintz at ahaintz@bigpond.net.au.
