BOWLS AT KILLARA GOLF CLUB
WOMEN'S BOWLS

The women's committee 2002

Since inception, ladies bowls was on Tuesday then later, Friday was added. Both these days are the Associates' days on the golf course and some of the older ladies predictably didn't take up bowls when items such as electric buggies became available extending their golfing lives.

The lady bowlers formed their first Lady Bowlers' Sub-Committee in 1957, however a request to be allowed an extra half day bowls on Tuesday afternoons was rejected. Come 2007, the ladies play Wednesday and Saturday - there has been no requests for extra times but, if it were to happen no doubt there would be a means of accommodating them.

Pictured on the left is the ladies committee 2002 (L to R) - Mesdames Grace White, Betty Allerton, Sheila Guest (Chair at that time), Vivienne Goodearl. Mrs Jo Millyard is absent.

Mrs. D. A. (Jeanette) Wylie could see the merit in bowling on Wednesdays. She encouraged a few ladies to play social bowls on that day and these numbers started swelling so she tried to discontinue Tuesday bowls in favour of the former, but her suggestion to alter the tradition initially failed. Finally, however, at an AGM on 16 November 2000, Mrs Jean Fry proposed that the main bowling day should be Wednesday. Though it was not a unanimous decision, the motion was passed and of a consequence their numbers developed to a marked degree. Ladies bowling days that used to be Tuesdays & Fridays was shifted to ladies day on Wednesday with a Medley event each Saturday and numbers continue to increase.

Also in 2001 at a Bowls Committee Meeting on 8 March, it was decided that creams would be no longer compulsory attire on Saturdays for the men. This meant that the first Tuesday in each month was the only day that traditional cream atttire was obligatory and even this was queried. It was decided to put the matter to a general vote and this went in favour of retaining the creams though the wording of the notice could have been slightly misleading for some. A further ballot held in 2003 confirmed the earlier situation. The ladies were a step ahead of the men in abandoning compulsory whites in 2000. White (or navy blue slacks) are still worn on invitation days at Killara and away as the photograph below depicts.

In response to a member's request, a further survey was held in 2002 on creams for men and this overwhelmingly confirmed that members favoured keeping the tradition of creams once per month.
