BOWLS AT KILLARA GOLF CLUB
CONSTRUCTION OF THE PAVILION

The first talk about the pavilion (the one currently used) was on 19 July 1960. Mr. C.C. (Colin) Brewster, a club member and partner in Brewster, Murray & Partners (Architects) submitted plans for a new toilet block at the old pavilion. However it was felt that more consideration should be given to the best position for a new pavilion, which would have a toilet block, attached. The Bowls Sub-Committee was to go into the matter immediately.

They seemed to have more luck with the pavilion than they had with the second green because the August meeting saw "plans to be submitted" and the November meeting reports "building of the pavilion is progressing rapidly". Built by W.J. Arnold Pty Ltd at a cost of £3,810/-/- the pavilion was in use 21 February 1961 and was officially opened by the President & Captain on 25 February.

Some of the honour boards

The first mention of honour boards is on 18 July 1961. Whether they existed previously and were hanging in the clubhouse is not clear but as the note "matter of lettering these boards deferred until next meeting" infers that no honour boards previously existed. They were eventually hung in October 1962 "either side of the Queen's portrait".

A meeting held 5 April 1973 records a letter received from Mr. C.L. McDonald querying the Honour Board for the Pairs Championship and the non-inclusion of the years 1953-54. He must have featured in the event all those twenty years ago! The committee agreed to investigate the records, but as the first year included on the board as exists is 1956, the result was not found. It would be interesting however to know what happened to all the very early results; in all probability they were never retained.

The pavilion must have been a real "social centre" as in a minute 20 March 1962 the Secretary stated that on several occasions the money had not been taken up to the clubhouse until after 7.00pm meaning that staff were forced to work overtime to check & record takings. The pavilion must close at 6.30pm so why the delay? One can only assume!

Bowls in trouble. A minute "on occasions the amount of money received for drinks consumed at the Bowling Green falls considerably short of the estimated return for the quantity consumed and recently over a period of three Saturdays and two Sundays the deficiency was approximately £11/-/-". The request came for all spirits to be poured by measure as apparently different members had differing views as to what was a nip. That was 1953 and does not get further mention, but 21 July 1959 money shortages again. June shortage £13/19/3 was a considerable improvement on May, so goodness knows what it was previously!

Notice Board
Discussion at the women's notice board

There is no shortage of information for bowlers. Three notice boards are provided to keep members fully informed on all aspects of bowls. Forthcoming events, results (mostly on daily basis) and committee meeting minutes are all there. Of course, this is information that can also be viewed here on this website.

In addition a folded A4 newspaper style sheet called "Bowls News" is produced and distributed every two months giving news, coaching tips and (to be kind) "padding".

In 1999 after experiencing trouble with youths consuming drugs on the pavilion's open verandah, the ends were secured with doors. Before the closure one girl's wallet was found there. She claimed that some person had stolen same and left it there! Worse still, one girl left her lacy knickers in a waste bucket adjacent to the green - they must have been "good" nights!
