BOWLS AT KILLARA GOLF CLUB
MIXED BOWLING OVER THE YEARS

On the 18 April 1963 a letter was received from Mrs. K.M. Burnett on behalf of Associate Bowlers asking that mixed bowls be played one Sunday each month, so it was decided to hold a club & invitation mixed day on 26 May 1963. Fifty-six entries were received which gave them a fully occupied green - seven rinks with two teams of four on each rink. The next mixed bowls day did not take place until December the same year and the one following that May 1964 - hardly a monthly event as envisaged by Mrs. Burnett.

Later mixed bowls became very popular with men & women both and Sunday saw a regular competition run in the latter stages by Mr A.K. (Alan) Wylie that was very well attended. However the event seemed to lose popularity and fails to get a mention after G. Hughes finished his term as Chairman in December 1977. It would appear that Roly Travis failed to push them and Harold Wood was not particularly interested in the matter either, so the enthusiasm previously existing died with them.

Mixed bowls was revived again in 2000 by Mrs. J. R. (Jo) Millyard of the women's bowls section, who suggested mixed twilight bowls and a barbecue at the club. The men's committee appointed Mr. D. M. (David) Ball to work with Jo Millyard in organising the day which was held 2 March 2001. After the day's success a further match was held on 26 October the same year and after that event the general feeling was to make it a regular day. It is held in addition to the annual Clouston trophy which is simply a women vs men event on one day each year.

With a view to reversing the declining number of Saturday bowlers, the then Chairman Jim Watson inaugurated a mixed medley draw with women participating from January 2002. As a result, the first lady to participate was Mrs D. M. (Struan) Ball on 5 January 2002 who played second in a triples match and the Mixed Sunday Bowls was abandoned in favour of the Saturday.

The move was extremely well supported and 2005 saw numbers in excesss of 40 at times. The day developed a carnival atmosphere and many players (especially women) feel competition from their male counterparts has improved their games - in actual fact the reverse is most likely the case, the men's games have improved to keep pace with the women!

The first year that ladies were encouraged to attend the ex-sevice dinner was 2005 and a trophy was donated by Lex McCorquodale and Tom Crossman for the winners of the Ex-Service Day at bowls. Any tie is decided by a countback and the trophy is retained in the pavilion trophy cabinet.

Killara never had any protection from the summer sun other than beach umbrellas, that did provide some shelter, but were largely unsatisfactory. In 2003 thanks to the outstanding generosity of Mr. T.A. (Alex) Tonkin, 41 special awnings were installed providing much needed and appreciated cover. They can be operated manually or electronically.
