KGC were very keen to keep bowls as an amenity and not have it develop as a separate entity. Dr. Madden brought up the matter of affiliation with the NSW Bowling Association (now Royal - RNSWBA) outlining some of the pros and cons - not being affiliated could result in members being unable to use other clubs when on holidays or visiting. Dr. Cunningham spoke in the same vein and expressed the opinion that if they did not affiliate, their
members would have no standing at other clubs. On the other hand if the club did affiliate, it would be possible that the Association commandeer the green and allocate certain matches to the inconvenience of members.

The Chairman replied that it was not their intention to apply for affiliation at that time, but after bowls had been put on a firm footing, the matter "would be gone into". With a view to improving the play on our green Mr. Hall suggested that they arrange as many games as possible with other clubs. The affiliation matter was brought up again on 22 July 1954 when they sought some form of membership with then NSWBA so as not to interfere with other members but enable KGC the privilege of playing at bowling clubs when visiting country areas. Golf clubs from many Sydney clubs used to have bowling greens in addition to their golf courses and in 1957 Killara carried off the A Grade Golf Club Pennant. Clubs that still retain dual facilities are Elanora, Pymble, Manly, Royal Sydney and Concord and many rather musty woollen pennants still remain reminding us of earlier days. |
As no such arrangement exists to this day it must be assumed that any move was unsuccessful which is of no consequence to present devotees. In fact speaking in 2004, it appears quite unecessary as the vast majority of clubs welcome accredited players of any standing whatever.
There was another discussion concerning affiliation at a meeting held 3 May 1973 concerning the
When Mr. Beardmore reported back to his committee they unanimously rejected the statement of the Lady President and approved a letter to be forwarded to the association suggesting that the rule barring affiliated members from playing at non-affiliated clubs be reviewed. Their reply was announced at a meeting on 5 July 1973 where the minute reads, "The meeting noted the contents of the letter of reply from the Women's Bowling Association which refuses to alter its rules to allow affiliated members to play at a non-affiliated club". So there! - in the enlightened years of the 21st century this regulation seems to be largely non-existent.

S.G. Montgomery was appointed as Chairman 19 June 1948 with the same sub-committee as previously existed. His first headache cropped up in October. Printed NSW Bowls Association minutes of 30 September contained a paragraph spotted by Mr. Taunton - the actual newspaper clipping is pasted in our minute book.
"General
Mr. Cullen-Ward drew attention to Killara Golf Bowling Club's action
in giving letters of introduction to its members for country bowling clubs.
This is not affiliated with N.S.W.B.A.
Appropriate action will be taken."
Mr. Norton took the matter in hand and it is minuted, "Resolved that Mr. Norton's action in contacting the President of the NSWBA in connection with this matter be approved and further that he be deputed to interview Mr. Cullen-Ward to ascertain the details upon which this charge was based."
The result was a fizzer. Mr Norton reported that his interview with Mr. Cullen-Ward was abortive, but explained that Mr. G. Murray (a member of Killara Golf Club and the Delegate from the Raleigh Park B.C.) had raised the matter at NSWBA Council Meeting in November which resulted a further paragraph.
"General Business
Mr. Murray (Raleigh Park) drew attention to the item in October "Bowls in N.S.W" regarding Killara Golf Club and letters of introduction.
The president states he has been assured by the Killara Golf Club bowling section that no such letters of introduction have ever been officially issued by that body to affiliated bowling clubs."
"The Sub-Committee resolved to take no further action in the matter", and a matter which was potentially embarrassing was cleared up.
