Cloncurry to Dubbo

Saturday June 7th   Friday July 25th 2003

 

 

 

 

 

Day 14 Friday 20th June        52km

Satphone 8pm Diamantina– “We did 104 kms on dirt yesterday, mainly following the four wheel drive ruts.

Vicki was dumped in the dirt a couple of times.

BBQ and camp tonight with 1700 head of cattle, 25 horses and assorted drovers.

They travel at 11 kms a day and think we are the mad ones.

The stars are brilliant in a black velvet sky. We may be in the park for a couple of days

as the area between us and Winton is flooded and access is currently barred.”

 Cycle to Diamantina National Park (Dirt)                                 

Cross Gum Creek Visit Gum Waterhole, walk up Gum Creek and bush camp.

Day 13 Thursday 19th June (Di’s birthday!) 80km

Cycle to Springvale (Dirt)                                                                  

Cross over Horse, Coolibah and Spring Creeks

Day 12 Wednesday 18th June 40km

Boulia Wed. "It rained Tuesday morning while we were still 40 kms north

of Hamilton. The mud was so thick with grass that we were completely bogged.

We removed jammed mud flaps and chiseled the mud from everywhere.

We had to wait until a cattle truck went past and were able to ride into Hamilton

in it's wheel tracks. Left Hamilton about 2 pm and rode the 80kms to Boulia.

Three hours in the light and 2 hours in the dark. The Hotel had organised

dinner & bed for us and $200 for the Royal Flying Doctors.

Many thanks to them and we are back on schedule!"

Day 11 Tuesday 17th June 76km

Cycle to Boulia (Bitumen)                                                          

On the Burke River

Visit ‘peterosaurs’ flying reptiles, Aboriginal spear and shield making,

telegraph station, waddid trees (10km out) and min min lights. Town camp.

Day 10 Monday 16th June 123km

Satphone 8pm “We’re camped about 100k’s from Boulia in the middle of nowhere. We had to take some different roads and are on slow dirt most of the time, so are on the track from about seven in the morning till 5 at night. One station owner pulled up in front and wrote a $25 cheque for the Flying Doctors on the bonnet of his wagon. Sending diary entries Thursday and photo’s by the weekend hopefully.

Day 9 Sunday 15th June 85km

“We have to keep an eye on the large Brahman cattle, they seem to be everywhere.”

Day 8          Saturday 14th June REST DAY

Ride 13km out to Combo Waterhole Conservation Park and do 40mins

 return walk to waterholes crossing historic stone pitched overshots

 built by Chinese labour over Diamantina River.

Ride out of town 45km and camp on river.

 

 

Day 7          Friday 13th June 76km

Cycle to Kynuna along Matilda Highway (Bitumen)                       

Cross over Gilliat River and Wild Duck Creek

Visit the Blue Heeler Hotel and Waltzing Matilda exhibition

Camp near pub or in it!

Day 6 Thursday 12th June 94km

Cycle to McKinlay (21km bitumen, 73km dirt)                             

(via Longford Plains,Kamerooka and Rutchillo stations)

Cross over Gilliat River, Julia, Eastern, Sadowa and Wild Duck Creeks

Pub stay at ‘The Walkabout Creek Hotel’ Crocodile Dundee

Day 5 Wednesday 11th June 73km

in Julia creek 4th day down and bloody hot weather, 30 plus and headwinds

 but managing about 15km an hour.

 Watching footy tonight with some horse guys we met down the track!”

Cross over Fullarton and McKinlay Rivers, Holy Joe and Eastern Creeks

Day 4 Tuesday 10th June 59km

“$170 at GILBERT Caravan Park in Cloncurry also met Greg Woods, paralympian”.

Cycle to Oorindi, Barkly Highway (bitumen, 5km dirt)

Cycle to Cloncurry on the Barkly Highay (bitumen) via Burke & Wills memorial (43km before Cloncurry).

 Cross over Corella River.

Visit RFDS Base, John Flynn Place (Fred McKay Art Gallery, RFDS Museum, Alfred Traeger Cultural Centre), Qantas Hanger, Afghan/Chinese Cemetery.

Cycle to Kathleen Ruins, Barkly Highway (bitumen)
