My research into the Williams/Willings of South-Eastern Cambridgeshire spans around two decades. For much of that time I was "stuck" - unable to find where "my" George Williams (1754-1784) of Weston Colville had come from. It was only when I realised that the WILLIAMS and WILLINGS families were one that I found the pieces of my family jigsaw falling rapidly into place.

To connect the various Williams/Willings family groups as accurately as possible, I first searched parish registers for the relevant parishes, before obtaining many family members' wills and administrations. Even with those, it was sometimes difficult to choose between people of the same name and era. Where it was necessary to make choices, I looked for continuation of trades/occupations and the recurring use of christian names within family groups.

My research formed the basis of my book Great Queenslanders: the story of George & Rachel Williams, their ancestors and descendants. It follows my Williams/Willings ancestry from the Cambridgeshire villages of Castle Camps, Shudy Camps and Horseheath, north to Weston Colville, and in 1874 to Queensland, Australia.

Since publishing Great Queenslanders, some important new finds have been made:

The reason for the confusion between Williams and Willings became evident when the marriage of Sibyl Williams and John Willings was found (10 February 1605/05 at Bedford St Peter).  It is now thought highly likely that Edward Willings/Williams of Castle Camps was the eldest son of this couple though conclusive evidence proves elusive.

A second find has located a new and crucial family member probably born at Horseheath but not found in Horseheath Parish Registers.  He is Richard Willings, son of John and Mary, referred to in the PCC will of his grandfather, Edward Willings (1636-1717/18).  It is now thought probable  that it was this Richard who married Elizabeth Hatley at Horseheath in 1713, rather than one of the other two Richard Willings (each his first cousin once removed) previously considered likely.  I have revised my tree to show this new scenario, but once again it is all open to new research findings.

Set out below are ten generations of my Williams/Willings research. In most cases the surname is shown as registered at time of baptism. If you think any of these family members "belong" to you, I would be pleased to hear from you.
