The purpose of this page is to share a little of the information I
have collected on the village of Weston Colville, where members of my family
lived from at least 1670-1874. While my primary Cambridgeshire interests are
covered in Great
Queenslanders and on my Williams/Willings
and Missen
pages, I am also interested in the following families from South-Eastern
Cambridgeshire and adjoining parts of Suffolk and Essex:
ADAMS, BRIGNELL,
BROWN, CARTER, COLLETT, CROPLEY, FINCHAM, FREE, FREEMAN, GILBY, GLOVER, HATLEY,
HAYLOCK, HEATH, JACOB, JAGGARD, LORD, MARSH, MARTIN, MORDEN, NORDEN, RANEWE,
RANNOWE, ROBINSON, ROOKS, SALE, SMITH, SPARROW, STARLING, STARRE, TAYLOR,
TEVERSHAM, WAPLES, WARD.

Is bounded on the north and south by the parishes of Brinkley and West Wratting, and on the east by Carlton. It contains 2,943 acres; its population in 1801 was 318; in 1831, 444; and in 1841, 530 souls. The amount of assessed property is £ 2,442. The soil of the parish is rich, and the principal proprietor is John Hall, Esq., the lord of the manor. Manor.--The principal manor was for several generations in the family of Colville, to which it appears to have passed by marriage with an heiress of the Ufford's in the reign of Edward I. It was afterwards in the possession of the Fynderne family, from which it passed successively to the families of Elliott, Puttenham, Dacre, and Carter, and it is now the property of Mr. Hall. The Village of Weston Colville, which is small and irregularly built, is 7 miles south of Newmarket. The Church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, consists of a nave, chancel, south porch, north chapel, and square western tower. Over the porch, in a niche, is a figure of the Blessed Virgin and Infant Saviour; and the side chapel is the burial-place of the Hall family. The living is a rectory in the deanery of Camps, rated in the King's books at £ 21. 13s. 6-1/2d., but now returned at £ 200. nett per annum. John Hall, Esq. is the patron, and the Rev. Wm. Acton, M.A., incumbent. At the enclosure of the parish, pursuant to an act of parliament passed in 1777, land was allotted in lieu of tithes. The Rectory-House, a genteel residence, stands a little N.E. of the church.-- Here is a Primitive Methodist Chapel erected in 1847, and in connexion with which is a Sunday school well attended. Weston Hall, the seat of John Hall, Esq., an ancient looking mansion with a good north front, stands a little west from the church. For the charities see the table prefixed to this hundred. Directory.--Rev. John Acton, M.A.; John Hall, Esq., Weston-hall; Charles Cream, miller; James Claydon, vict., Three Horse-shoes; Richard Ford, grocer; John Gowd, blacksmith; John Hillman, blacksmith; James Missen, beer-retailer; and the farmers are--John Ellam Parker, George Jonas, and Martin Slater. Letters are received through the Linton post-office. |
