Mickan & Tscherne / Schwartz / Schwarze Families

of Upper Lusatia & Australia

The Mickan and Tscherne/Schwartz/Schwarze families were Wends or Sorbs - a slavic race. Before immigrating to South Australia in 1850, they had lived around the villages of Cortnitz, Groditz and Rackel in Upper Lusatia - now a part of Germany. On arrival in South Australia, they settled in the Barossa Valley. In 1867, some family members were part of a "trek" which followed the Murray River to the Albury area of New South Wales. There, they took up farms at Bethel near Walla Walla. Around the turn of the century, various Mickan descendants moved on again, this time settling in South-East Queensland. Mickan and Tscherne/Schwartz/Schwarze descendants are still to be found in each of these areas today,

I am indebted to Pastor Paul Proeve and the Mickan Reunion Committee for their publication, From Cortnitz to South Australia : The Mickan Story, which has provided me with ready made family histories for my Mickan and Tscherne/Schwartz/Schwarze lines. Please note that where two surnames are given (eg Tscherne/Schwartz and Tischler/Zschiessla), it indicates the Wendish/German versions of the one surname. Once in Australia, the families generally settled on the German version of their name.

** I also descend from the second marriage of Peter Tscherne/Schwartz/Schwarze, through his daughter, Christiana "Auguste". This branch of the family are most often recorded as Schwarze. Auguste married her father's nephew by his first marriage, Johann Mickan (1852-1938). Peter's second family was:
