I have never painted before and have heard many things said. I must paint
the canopy of my Chipmonk. Do you use primer, paint,a clear finnish.? What kind?
Fuel proof? This is my 1st time, I need help.

I have used Lustrecoat made by Topflite for painting canopies. I masked
the canopy with electrical tape, which conforms to curves very well and
doesn't let paint bleed in. I used the paint according to the directions on
the can, and got fantastic results.

I thought Lustrekote was not recommended for canopies. The GP Giles kit
recommends against using it anyway.

I used butyrate dope (fuelproof) on my CG Chipmunk, and I used white dope
brushed on the canopy. Lightly sand the area you wish to paint, wipe off or
wash the outside good, let dry and trim with a vinyl tape. I painted (brushed)
the white right on and it`s been there for 8 years now, never came off. If you
want to spray it mask off everything, and watch for overspray. I never "clear"
any of my dope finishes but if you like go ahead after the white has dried for
a few days. If you use another kind of paint you may need a primer (read the
directions for that paint) and make sure you can use it on plastic canopy`s,
the procedure is the same. rick markel

Damn, I wish I had known that before I did it. It seemed to work pretty
well on a SIG canopy though. Maybe the Giles kit has a plastic more
sensitive to it or something. Bottom line, try any paint out on scrap
first...
