Some History on the Cane Toad.

The cane toad is a very real threat to Australia’s environment. It was imported from Hawaii eighty-one years ago to try to stop the cane beetle from destroying sugar cane crops in Queensland. The idea didn’t work because the toads, who cannot jump very high, couldn’t reach the beetles who were living at the to of the sugar cane. When it was found that the toads did nothing at all to help rid the crops of the beetle the farmers conjured up new methods as to wipe out the beetles that were causing the damage. No one ever thought to catch the cane toads that had been released. This has proven to be a very big mistake, because cane toads breed in massive numbers (one female laying up to 40 000 eggs at a time), this has caused a huge impact on Australia’s environment and animals.
