Descendants of Robert Fleetwood Berry (1777-1822)

 (5th Generation of Descent from Progenitor John Berry)

 

1.  Robert Fleetwood Berry (son of Thomas BERRY and Frances Berry), b. 1 Jan. 1777, d. 21 Aug.1822, buried at Eglish; of Shannon Harbour, King's Co. As a very young man he was apprenticed, from 1793 until sometime after 1801, to Mr John Brennard, a cotton merchant of Castle Street, Liverpool. By 1804 he was back in Ireland, working in the linen trade in Dublin. However, he returned to the King's Co. and in 1812 was living at Gallen, being employed in connection with the Grand Canal; living at Gallen in 1812. [LAW].  He died suddenly at Shannon Harbour, three weeks  after  the death of his youngest daughter.

     He married Elizabeth Crow, b. 1786, d. 8 April 1848; buried at Eglish; second daughter of Edward Crow of Tullamore, Kings Co., by Margaret Newcomb, daughter of William Newcomb of Aughanvilla, Kings Co.

                      ii     Isabella Margaret Berry, b. 16 Nov. 1815 baptized at Reynagh Co. Meath, d. 20 Sept. 1897 in Dublin; buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery.  Isabella  wrote a short account of the Berry family history; according to L.A.W. much of it is inaccurate. It includes the nicknames of Thomas and Frances Berry's children used here.

2.   Frances Alicia Berry (daughter of Robert Fleetwood Berry), b. 1814, d. 8 Jan. 1841 buried at the new church at Linally. Lived with her parents at Shannon Harbour until her father's death in 1822. Thereafter, together with her younger sister, brother and mother, she lived in Tullamore, possibly with her aunt Isabella Crow, until her marriage.

She married 24 April 1833 at Tullamore, Nathaniel Robert Slator, b. c. 1806 in Kings Co., d. 15 April 1839 at Tullamore; buried at Lynally; son of George Slater of Wood of Oogh, Tullamore by Jane, dau. of Capt. Lowe. Educ. at Luxembourg School, Dublin and T.C.D. where he was admitted as Pens. 20 Oct. 1823, aged 17.  B.A. 1828; M.A. 1832. Curate of Tullamore 1831; chaplain to County gaol, Tullamore.

3.  Edward Fleetwood Berry (son of Robert Fleetwood Berry), b. 9 Feb. 1817 in King's Co., d. 29 April 1875 at Trim; buried at Eglish. Educ. by Mr. Lyon, T.C.D. 1833, aged 16, B.A. 1838, ord.      He married 29 March 1843 in Stillorgan Church, Penelope Andrews, b. 20 Oct. 1819, d. 11 Jan. 1892 at Fermoy, Co. Cork; buried at Eglish.

                      iii    Thomas William Berry, b. 30 Jan. 1850 at  Tullamore, d. 2 Apr 1910 at Kingstown; buried at Deans Grange. Educ. at Portarlington. Worked at the National Bank; Manager, Kingstown Branch at time of his death.

                             He married (1) 24 March 1883 at St Mary's Cheltenham, Charlotte Eleanor Atkinson, b. 29 March 1860, d. 23 July1900 at Kingstown; buried Dean's Grange Cemetery, Monkstown, Co. Dublin,  dau. of Adam Atkinson of Lorbottle Hall,  Northumberland J.P., by Charlotte Eustatia Collett, heir of John Collett of Upper Belgrave Square, London and Locker's Hall Co. Hertford, M.P.

                              He married (2) at St Helen's, Bayswater, Henrietta Osborne, b. 5 Mar 1862, d. 17 July 1939,  dau. of Thomas Osborne. Henrietta was a widow. She married a third time after the death of Thomas.

                      iv   Penelope Berry, b. 26 Dec. 1851 at Tullamore, d. 10 Feb. 1890 at Fermoy, Co. Cork; buried at Eglish. Unmarried.

                      v     Francis Charles Berry, b. 1854 at Tullamore, d. 2 Oct 1934 in New York; buried there. Educ. at Chard Grammar Sch. Clerk at Kells branch of National Bank, then in South Africa. St Bees Theological Coll. Ordained d. 1883, pr. 1887 (Algoma); S.P.G. Missionary at St George Bruce Mines, Algoma, Ontario1883-8.      She married 12 Aug 1863 at St Mary's, Athlone, John Swift Joly, b. 23 July 1818 in Dublin, d. 1887 at Athlone; buried there; son of Charles Joseph Joly of Clonmoyle, Mullingar, by Catherine, dau. of John Swift of Lynn. T.C.D. B.A 1839 M.A. 1852. Called to the Bar, King's Inns, 1842. Ordained deacon 1849, priest 1850; C. of Rathcoole 1852; of Pontefract 1853; R. of Kilbride, Tullamore, 1861-69; of Athlone 1869-87. Author of several articles (see LAW).

                      iii    Frances Isobel Joly, b. 13 June 1868 at Tullamore, d. Jan.1947 at Ard-na-Bel, Clonskeagh.

                             She married 9 Feb.1911 in Rathgar, her cousin, Henry Edward Joly, b. 10 Aug. 1854 at Holywood, King's Co., d. 1919;  son of Rev. John P. Joly, R. of Clonfast, by Julia, dau. of Count de Lusi ( a soldier of fortune of Greek origin, who fought for the Prussians against the Danes)).  No children.

 

                      iv    Isabel Emily Joly, b. 1 Apr.1871 in Athlone, d. 14 Jan. 1921 in California; buried at Napa. Nurse at Addenbrooke's Hosp., Cambridge and the Rotunda, Dublin. District Nurse in Dublin and Haslemere.

                             She married 1914 in San Francisco, Ernest Cook.  Of Huddersfield. Isabel was the second of his three wives. No Children.

5.  Nathaniel Jerome Robert Slator (son of Frances Alicia Berry), b. 1839 in King's Co., d. 1 April 1904 at 44 Linden Road, Bedford. Educ. at T.C.D., admitted as Pens. 15 Jan. 1858, aged 18.  28th Foot. Ensign 1859. Lieut. by purchase 1864. Sold his commission 1868. Owned 680 acres in King's Co., valued at £249 p.a. Farmed at Eglish Cottage.

     He married 2 July 1868 at Monkstown, his second cousin, , Matilda Berry, b. 12 Nov 1842 at Tullamore, (daughter of Francis (Frank) Octavius Berry and Susanna Fetherstonhaugh) d. 22 Feb 1936 at 37 St Andrew's Rd. Bedford.

Salthill, Galway, Jan. 25 1956  dau. of Abraham Thomas Chatterton of Dublin, Chief Clerk Vice Chancellor's Court, by Jane daughter of Bernard Shaw of Monkstown Castle, Co. Cork.

                             Children:

                      i      Edward Fleetwood Berry, b. 23 May 1888 in Sligo; baptized at Calry, co. Sligo, d. of wounds received in Mesopotamia [modern Iraq] on 17 April 1916. He left school in 1906 and passed into Sandhurst; 2nd Lt. Wiltshire Regiment 1907; Lt. 1909; transferred to the Indian Army Goorka Rifles 1909, Burma Rifles 1914 and was A.D.C. to Lord Carmichael, Governor of Bengal; also served in the Great War in France and Mesopotamia. Awarded the Military Cross for ‘brilliant dash and leadership’ at Neuve Chapelle on 10 March 1915. [Abingdon News 2003].

Eng. (son of Thomas Hornby of Barmby Moor, Co York, M.D.), by Thomasine daughter of Thomas Danby of the Manor, Stamford Bridge, Co. York.

                      iv    Erin Danby Berry, b. 20 Dec.1893 at Tufnell Park, London, d. Oct. 8, 1916 in France. Educ. at Parkhill, Seaforth and Meaford. Enlisted 1915 in the Canadian Field Artillery; 6th Brigade; 22nd Howitzer Battery. Killed in the Great War, aged 22. Buried in Becourt Military Cemetery, Somme, France. Plot: I.X. 26. Service Number: 91138. Rank: Gunner. On Attestation Paper for enlistment he gives his trade/calling as 'Architectural draughtsman'.

            16.     v     Wenonah Vivien Berry b. 9 Oct. 1895.

                      vi    Fleetwood Becher Berry, b. 31 Dec. 1898 in Amherstburg, Ontario.  (son of John Berry). Educ. at Parkhill, Seaforth and Meaford. Toronto Univ. BA.  M.A. Lived at 86 Gormley Ave. Toronto. School teacher; President of Toronto Lodge for about eleven years.

                             He married 7 July 1925, Vera May Grant. They had two sons.

            17.     vii   Cyril Brian H. Berry b. 5 May 1901.

                      viii  Wilfred Stanley Crowe Berry, b. 30 May 1905 at Seaforth, Toronto Educ. at Seaford and Toronto; with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.  In WW2 joined R.C.A.M.C.  Lived at 452 Brennan Ave. Westboro, Ottawa.

                             He married 29 Jan 1941, Kathleen Annie Grant.

Worked in Helmholz's laboratory in Berlin; Astronomer Royal in Ireland and Andrews Professor of Astronomy 1897-1906. Sec. R.I.A. 1902; F.R.S. 1904 F.R.A.S. ; President of the International assoc. for promoting the study of Quaternions and allied systems of mathematics. Trustee  of the National Library of Ireland. Accompanied the Eclipse Expedition to Spain in 1900. Numerous scientific publications (see L.A.W.)

     He married 20 March1897 in Dublin, JessieMeade, b. 16 Dec. 1874 in Dublin, d. 1945, buried: in Mount Jerome;  dau. of Robert Warren Meade of Dublin by his second wife Jessie, dau. of William Jamieson of Dublin M.D.

10.  Susannah Maude Slator (daughter of Nathaniel Jerome Robert Slator), b. 5 Sept. 1872 at Eglish, d. 1 Jan.1930 at 44 Linden Rd. Bedford.  (dau. of Matilda Berry).

       She married 1896 in Bedford, Sydney Lethbridge, b. 8 Nov.1868 at Cawnpore, d. 2 June 1942 at Brighton.  son of Rev. William M. Lethbridge, of Felmersham, near Bedford, by Louisa, dau. of Robert Hickey of Taughman, Co. Westmeath.

       WW1 served in India and Burma  Lt. Col. R.G.A.   O.B.E. Despatches I.G. 26 Nov. 1918 and 11 June 1920.

Gen. G.S. Dobbie. Educ. at Bedford and Sandhurst. R. Inniskilling Fusilliers. 2/Lieut. 1890; Lieut.1892; transferred to I.A.I.S.C. 1892. Capt. 1901; Major 1908; Lieut. Col. 1916. Adjt. 3rd Inf. 12.  Frances Grace Slator (daughter of Nathaniel Jerome Robert Slator), b. 30 Dec. 1876 at Eglish, d. 9 Feb 1955 at Nottingham. (dau. of Matilda Berry). She married Henry Bruce Foote, b. 22 Apr 1863 at Madres, d. 8 June 1932 at Farnham Common.  Frances was his second wife. Son of Robert Bruce Foote of the Geological Survey of India. Served in East Africa [see LAW for details of military service].

13.  Edith Constance Slator (daughter of Nathaniel Jerome Robert Slator), b. 27 Jan 1880 at Eglish, d. 10 Dec.1938 at Farnham; buried there.
