Race Report | 29 – 30
March, Warwick
Carnell Raceway
in Warwick
played host to Round 1 of the Southern Downs Challenge on Saturday and
Sunday 29 – 30 March.
Having
collected my freshly-rebuilt 1992 Moriwaki MH80 from Springwood Suzuki on
the Friday afternoon preceding the meet, the performance of the old girl
was an unknown quantity. In
completely stock standard trim, I knew I’d have to dig deep if I were to
simply keep in touch with the latest Metrakit junior GP machinery.
The 2.1 km
circuit was greeted with fine and mild conditions on both days. Qualifying unfolded nicely and without
incident, where I managed to secure pole position with a 1:14.3, with Michael
Jones, Samuel Rankin and Linc Gilding, filling the front row respectively,
in the 11-bike junior field.
It was
certainly one hell of an effort to catapult my Moriwaki around the freshly
resurfaced circuit at the pointy end of the field. But as the saying goes, “what doesn’t
kill you only makes you stronger.”
The engine, I
felt, was only lacking slightly in the pony department in comparison to my
fellow front-running competitors. But
it was the wickedly evil and unpredictable rear suspension handling
characteristics of my bike that kept my eyes opened wider than a saucer all
weekend long.
As the weekend
progressed, the action certainly heated up, too. My result tally concluded with the
following: 1, 2, 1 and 3, which was good enough to give me the outright
points win for the weekend, with Michael Jones and Corey Schaffer rounding
out the top three.
My fastest lap
was set on lap 6 of 6 in the final race of the weekend, nailing a
respectable 1:12.6.
Thanks must go
to Tony Armstrong and my technician, Andrew France, for restoring my bike’s
power plant. And to my spray
painter, Steve Maartensz, thanks for helping out as my pit crew throughout
the weekend.
