Ryno’s Rundown | 10 –
11 May, Broadford
After a less than satisfying
third place result at Round 1 of the MRRDA junior series at Oran Park, due
to a technical gremlin, I must admit I was looking forward to tear-up the
Broadford bitumen at Round 2, held in Victoria on May 10 and 11.
With my Mega Motorcycles technician,
Andrew, on holidays and therefore unable to inject life back into my little
beast, I telephoned Motologic’s Paul Free to see if I could lease a CBR150
for the weekend. Fortunately Paul
had one available, and on the afternoon of Friday the 9th, I
threw a leg over it and hit the track for unofficial practice. It was pretty damn cool. Teknic Honda’s Wayne Maxwell lobbed and
took one for a fang as well, boasting the fastest lap of around 1:12 point something. I wasn’t too concerned though, as my
tyres were old and the rubber had well and truly gone off. Still, I was 1.5 seconds behind or
thereabouts.
A healthy contingency of 20
competitors fronted for Saturday’s official practice and qualifying
sessions. Still adorning the old
hoops in both, my times were around two seconds off where I needed to be. I thought, “Okay, I have a little work
ahead of me. In reality, it’s no
different to last year and, I enjoy a fight, so bring it on.”
Qualifying was held over two
sessions. A new set of Bridgestone
hoops were fitted to my 119 Honda, and with a tweak in the gearing
department, I spent Q1 chipping away at my times. The final qualifier progressed quite
well, where I secured a front row start from position number 2 with a
1:12.9, with Mike Jones securing pole, and Adrian Digiandomenico and Brody Nowlan
filling positions 3 and 4 respectively.
The racing was nothing short of
awesome. In each of the three races,
the lead changed constantly. Basically
one second I’d be in fifth, the next in first, and the next back in fourth. The only certainty was… well, there was
no certainty.
Josh Hook took the victory in the
first race, with Jones in second and yours truly filling the top
three. I took first place in race
two ahead of fellow Queenslanders, Kyle Buckley and James Mutton. And in the third and final race – the
Robbie Hermans Memorial Race – it was with great disappointment that I
could only manage third. Sure I had
won the round, which was mad, but I wanted to win the memorial race so that
I could present the trophy to Robbie’s son, and my best mate, Billy. Next year man!
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank Ray Olheiser and the Waters family for helping out
throughout the course of the weekend.
My folks couldn’t attend this meeting; so, without the help from
these people, I don’t believe I would have achieved the success that I did.
In conclusion, let me just say
that we contacted Wayne (Maxwell) to let him know that I got down to 1:11.716. Wayne’s
response was, “Man, I could do a 1:11 flat with the right gearing.” You’ve got love this dude, don’t
you? Not only is he a top bloke and
an awesome rider, he’s a comedian too!
