Welcome to Anthony Shorten's page. This page contains information that Anthony would like to pass onto the web for family, friends, work colleagues and potential work places to read and hopefully enjoy.
On this page you will find the following information:
A Summary of Anthony's Resume.
Current and planned projects (work and personal).
Travel diary for past and future trips.
The tale of the Hair Bare Bunch
The following projects are in progress for Anthony (so you can see that he is a busy man):
Novel writing - I have been planning to write a couple of novels for the last few years. One of these days I will start.
Science Fiction Trilogy - I started putting together a story about an alien that revisits Earth to prevent "his" planet and the Earth from being overrun by an evil third race. I realised that in fact I had to write a back story and a follow-up where the evil third race attempts to take over the aliens planet after being foiled at the Earth. So the "The Igon Wars" was conceived. Work In Progress. Below is the sample covers from the books. Each book covers a conflict with one of the races, represented by the color of the planet where the story is centered.
"Road" book - While travelling I started to piece together a humorous story of a group of travellers, all from different cultures, that are on a packaged sightseeing tour across Australia and how they start as strangers and at the end become great friends and actually band together to help one of the travellers, who is in desperate trouble from some bad guys and the authorities. A kind of "Kontiki tour meets the mob".
Tech's Guide to Life - A guidebook of techniques, tips and advice for technical people dealing with non-Technical things in their jobs. I have been compiling this for over 10 years...
Digital Photography - Got an Olympus C3030 a while back and have taken some great shots.. See Photo Page for examples.
Facility - Constantly updating and tweaking my home computer.
Tel Aviv, Israel - My company sent me to Israel to assist our Tel Aviv office resolve with some issues with the product. Generally, I was apprehensive about travelling there but eventually I was surprised how safe and quiet it was. The trip was successful but I was working so much that I did not have time to travel around. Only went to Old Jaffa on a cold and rainy Friday and spent the Sabbath working from the hotel (Hey, I am not Jewish!). Highlights, apart from work, were the "interviews" on the way in and out as well as the food and drink in the various cafes. The only lowlight was the bitter cold and rain on the Israeli weekend (i.e. Friday and Saturday) which limited travel activities.
San Francisco, California, United States - Due to the fact I could not get back from Israel to Australia directly (due to full flights to Australia due ti a combination of Chinese New Year/End of school holidays/Australia Day) I had to come back via the US from Israel (50 hours flight and waiting). To break up the travel, I stopped in head office in SFO to catch up with some "expats", run a quick session on writing documentation and meet the new product team. Highlights, apart from work, was the motor bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. Thanks Patrick.
San Francisco, California, United States - Working for a customer for a couple of weeks.
Canada, England, Germany - Holiday
Tokyo, Japan - Presales for a large customer and lots of sake nights.
Johannesburg, South Africa - Working with a local customer.
Manila, Philippines - Meeting at local office. Late nights with Andy, Gavin and David S.
London - For a meeting only. Met my new boss and the whole international team was together in one place. It also was cold there.
South Africa - A couple of weeks with a customer to assist them with planning production configuration. Interesting time with Australia winning the cricket and rugby and a mad dash home to sort out a couple of kidney stones.
Hong Kong - Training a partner in the Technical and functional part of the product and meeting potential customers with the salesman.
Manila - Review of local office and meet my boss again.
Manila - Training a few more architects/developers.
Adelaide, South Australia - Commute back and forth to visit customer.
London - Visit a customer in the Midlands for a couple of weeks to do some performance tuning.
South Africa - Visit a customer there to do some performance tuning.
