George VI

Errors & Varieties

Page 9

This page contains more scans of examples of KGVI flaws. This time from Jamaica, Fiji, Tristan Da Cunha, Leeward Islands, Newfoundland and the Seychelles.  With the exception of Newfoundland, they are unlisted flaws.

I invite you to comment on these flaws. Can you provide any information on them whether you have seen them before, whether they are constant flaws and what printings they come from.

1.    Jamaica 1938 10/- Myrtle-green (SG133) with a vertical scratch on the left angel.

I understand that this is a constant flaw and it comes from the Tangri collection.  It is one of the more noticeable flaws on the Jamaica set  and is mentioned in articles written about this set.

2. Tristan Da Cunha 1952, KGVI, ˝d Violet (SG 1) with an awful mess of the    overprint.

This is a very noticeable flaw and easily seen without magnification.  It has so many flaws that it is difficult to describe.  is How did it get past quality control.

3.    Fiji 1938 KGVI 2˝d overprint on 2d Brown & Green (SG267) with a break in the ‘2’ of ˝ of the overprint and the 2˝d , Brown & Green (SG256a) with an inking flaw at tshe top of the value tablet.

I don’t know whether these two overprint flaws are constant or not.  Fiji KGVI specialists, have you seen them before.?

4.   Newfoundland 1937, coronation 1c Grey, perf 13.75 (CW S26A) & perf 14.25 (CW  S4A) both with the fishhook flaw.

This is the scan from the previous page along with another copy of the flaw I found just recently, but in a different perf.  You will notice that the actual flaw differs on the two examples and that they are also in different shades of grey.

5.  Seychelles 1938 KGVI set.  Firstly, two scans (scan 1 & Scan 2) of the 6c Green (SG137ac)  with two different retouches from the same block/6. and secondly, the 20c  Brown-ochre (SG140ab)  with significant damage to the right of the kings head from a block/4.

These two blocks also come from the Tangri collection.  In this case they were written up as such at the back of the Seychelles collection of definitives along with a number of other positional blocks with flaws.  I may add a few of the other blocks on a later web page.

6.  Leewards 1938  KGVI, 2d Slate-grey (SG103a) with a double impression of ‘postage’.

This flaw is quite noticeable and a very nice keyplate flaw to add to my collection.  Along with the next scan, I found it in a batch of keyplates I purchased from a dealer.  I also found a number of other minor flaws on other copies that help with plating.

7.  Leewards 1938 KGVI 1˝d Yellow orange & Black (SG102)  with a damaged ‘1’ and a dot to the right of ‘d” in the value tablet.

These flaws are also very noticeable.  Have you this combination of flaws & where is it located on the sheet.

8.  Hong Kong 1938 KGVI, $1.00 Red orange & Green (SG156a) with an awful mess of the printing on the right side of the stamp.

Here again is something that should never have passed the quality control.  Have Kong specialists ever seen anything like it before.

9.  Grenada KGVI 1943, 10/- (SG163e) with a horizontal line (in inking flaw?)  across part of the left value tablet.

Another inking flaw??.  Possibly, not constant but very noticeable with the naked eye.
