KGVI

Errors & Varieties

Page 4

Attached are nine more items with unlisted flaws from a variety of colonies that you might find interesting.  I placed some other flaws aside that I had intended to include on my next web page and replaced them with these errors and flaws I picked during a couple of hours viewing of dealers stands at a local stamp day.

Many of flaws and errors may or may not be constant.  As mentioned previously, it depends on whether other examples can be found in other collections.   Most items have two or more scans to illustrate the flaws and the points I am making.

1.  Mauritius, 1952, KGVI, 10 Rupee, Green (SG172) with an awful mess on the  right side of the Kings head.

Here is yet another example of the many significant flaws that can be found in the KGVI sets printed by Harrison & Sons.  How did this flaw get passed the quality control at the printers. I doubt if it is a constant flaw as it would have been quickly noticed and the sheets would have been destroyed. Anyway, it looks great as a flaw.

2.  Gambia, 1938, 4/- Vermilion & purple (SG159) with a jagged vertical Scratch above the 'S' of 'shillings'.

This scratch looks like that a slip by the engraver has possibly caused this jagged mark.  I have found very few flaws on this very well printed set by Bradbury Wilkinson. Do you have any ideas as to the cause of this flaw.

3.  Hong Kong, 1938, 2c Grey, (SG141) with a broken 'E' in 'Cents'.

I haven't been able to afford to buy many of the Kong Kong, KGVI set due to the high price over the past few years and therefore have not come across many of the unlisted flaws.  Anyway, I think this is quite a good one and can be easily seen with the naked eye. I don’t know whether or not it is mentioned in the study paper on the KGVI definitives.

4.  Gold Coast, 3d Black, postage due, (SG D6), with a damaged dot below the 'd' of 3d.

I have not seen this flaw before as I don’t really collect postage dues.  Does anyone know whether or not it is constant.

5.   Penang, 1948, 3c Green (SG5) with a significant damage just above the left value tablet.

Another one of the Malaya keyplates, this time with a flaw on the top of the left value tablet of the Penang 3c Green. It is not difficult to see.

6.   Leeward Islands 1938, 2d, Olive-grey, (SG103) with a sliced last 'S' in 'Islands'.

This is a very noticeable flaw and can easily be seen by the naked eye. Nevertheless, I have included a magnified scan anyway. It is one of many flaws etc on the Leewards KGVI keyplates. Also included is a scan of the value tablet.

Dickon Pollard & Tanzy Brown at Murraypayne Ltd have looked at this scan and are of the opinion that  this “sliced last ‘S’ variety is found at R2/3RP on either  the July/Aug ’42 or Dec ’43 printing.

  1. Mauritius, 1938, 2c Olive-grey (SG252a), with a damaged '2' in the value tablet.

Lastly, one of the many flaws on the Mauritius KGVI set. This scan shows damage to the top loop of the '2' in the value tablet. There are so many similar flaws in this set to make it a collecting area on its own for the specialist.
