Serving the Armenian Community in South Australia

Home

The Armenian Community in South Australia is small and mainly based in Adelaide and its suburbs. In the 1960-70s period there was a steady influx of Armenians from the Diaspora, mainly the Middle East, and our community numbered around 400.

The Armenian Cultural Association of South Australia was founded in the late 1960s and was very active in the community with annual Balls, picnics and Social Evenings. We started Armenian classes for children on Sundays.Although the Armenian Community shrunk in the 1980s, the numbers were boosted by new arrivals from overseas and during the last 12 years the Armenian Association has remained very active.

Currently the Community meets monthly alternating between Armenian Social Evenings at the Payneham Community Centre or meeting for dinner in a hotel. Our Social Evenings take place in a  warm atmosphere, with a shared meal, singing and dancing.

There is no Armenian Apostolic Church in South Australia. Over the years we had visits from a priest of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Melbourne, and Father Sarkis Ouzounian from the Armenian Catholic Church in Sydney and later from Melbourne, visited us on a yearly basis during that time.

Since July 2005 we have been blessed by pastoral visits of His Grace Archbishop Aghan Baliozian. Such visits are treasured by our small Community and, from 2007, these visits will occur on a six monthly basis. Mass is celebrated in the beautiful Chapel of the Christian Brothers College in Frome Street, Adelaide. The Armenian Community is very grateful to the College for their generosity.

The Armenian Cultural Association is looking forward with confidence to participate in the bright future of South Australia.
